Officers responded to the area for the sound of shots fired, said police.

Montgomery County Police launched a homicide investigation Monday night after a man was found dead outside of an apartment in the Briggs Chaney neighborhood of Silver Spring, according to a statement from the department. This is the second Silver Spring homicide investigation in less than a week; a 21-year-old man was fatally shot inside of his White Oak apartment Friday.

Police said officers responded to the 13900 block of Castle Boulevard around 9:56 p.m. for the sound of shots fired and found a dead man on a paved path behind the apartment. The man had trauma to his body, police said.

Detectives cannot confirm the identity or the age of the victim, but police said more information will be available once the man's next-of-kin is notified. An autoposy will be conducted at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240.773.5070. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or leave a Crime Solvers tip here.
