Male, Schultz and Daniels-Cohen Lead in Takoma Park City Election Unofficial Results

The numbers are unofficial and provisional ballots could change the outcome of one ward.

With three contested races out of seven, Takoma Park saw its highest voter turnout in three city elections and one race is still too close to call.

Though the numbers are in, they are unofficial. The Takoma Park City Council will certify the votes in a short meeting Wednesday night.

“There are enough provisional ballots in one ward to change the results,” Election Judge Anne Sergeant said. Sergeant would not disclose which race is still dependent on those provisional ballots. One race is held by 21 votes and those provisional ballots could change that outcome.

In Ward 2, in a closely contested race between Tim Male and Lorig Charkoudian, Male is on top with 344 votes.

In Ward 3, Kay Daniels-Cohen is beating Jeffrey Noel-Nosbaum and Mike Graul with 322 votes.

If her lead holds and she is voted in, Daniels-Cohen’s first order of business would be to address the tax duplication issue where residents pay both the county and city for services they receive solely from the city.

“I want to know what it will take to make a difference,” she said.

Uniting Ward 3, which is shaped like an hourglass, is also important to Daniels-Cohen.

“I want to connect both sides so residents talk to each other,” she said. “In the last four years, the ward has changed into younger residents with babies who want to make something happen.”

In Ward 6, where the Takoma Langley Sector Plan the most important issue to most voters, Fred Schultz is on top with 129 votes.

For Schultz, wrapping up the Takoma Langley Sector Plan and the urban design plan process is the foremost issue when he returns to the dais.

“I want to put that issue to bed,” Schultz said.

Whether Washington Adventist Hospital will stay in Takoma Park is also important to Schultz.

“Either way it’s going to be a very complicated process and the council is going to need to work it out,” he said.

Schultz hopes the new councilmembers understand the process of working together on the council.

“They should listen and learn,” he said. “It’s like a tidal wave. It all happens so fast.”

In the uncontested races, Terry Seamens kept his seat in Ward 4 with 191 votes, Reuben Snipper will once again represent Ward 5 with 72 votes, Bruce Williams is again the mayor with 1,633 votes and Seth Grimes, the only uncontested candidate who wasn’t an incumbent, won his seat in Ward 1 with 239 votes.

All numbers are unofficial. Provisional ballots still need to be counted.
