Associated Press called for incumbent Ben Cardin to win re-election minutes after the polls closed in Maryland.
Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin won re-election to the U.S. Senate, defeating Republican Dan Bongino and independent Rob Sobhani.
Cardin received 53 percent of the vote, while Bongino had 28 percent and Sobhani had 17 percent just before midnight on Tuesday.
Cardin celebrated his re-election with other prominent Democrats at a lounge in M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. In his victory speech, Cardin praised GOP candidate Bongino for running a clean campaign, while saying Sobhani did not.
Sobhani, who had previously run as a Republican, reportedly spent more than $4 million to run as an independent and was criticized recently for his last-minute robocalls to potential voters.
“I gained a great deal of respect for Dan Bongino,” Cardin said.
Bongino, the former secret service agent from Severna Park, also said the Cardin campaign was a "class act." He spoke to Cardin as the results came in, and congratulated him on the victory.
"He has been a gentleman, he has been a class act," Bongino said. "We may have political differences, we have from the beginning, but we actually became close friends toward the end."
In an interview following his victory speech, Cardin said he is looking forward to getting back to work and was hopeful the Senate would address pressing issues in the coming lame duck session.
He also expressed enthusiasm for returning to work with his party still in the majority.
“I think we had great candidates who ran fantastic campaigns that really connected with the voters," Cardin said.

Ben Cardin will protect the people of MD interests in the US Senate as he has done before. He and Mikulski make a great team for working families. MD is #1 in the nation in education. The only sorry thing abt last nights election was the win for the casninos. Not happy about that one.

Mikulski only remains in office to keep the seat warm for O'Lair when his term is up. Last night the people voted to move this country "FORWARD" but how can that be when we continue to vote the same people into office? I took the gamble yesterday and voted against every incumbent to possibly create change, but the people spoke and it is what it is now we will have to see how the future unfolds.

Eastsider, c'mon man. I would have bet that would have been your vote anyway. They were all Democratic incumbents.

Mikulski remains in office because the Repuglians can't find any decent candidate to run against her. In Maryland the GOP is a party of Kooks and Imbeciles.

Last I checked Cardin had 55%.
More problematic for republicans is we had a miserable economy, but slowly improving and the Republicans could not pin the poor economy on the President. As long as Republicans have to go hard right to get nominated and then flip flop to the middle fr the general election they are doomed. That's just the facts ma'am.

One of the first things you have said i can agree with 100%.
Playing to the the bible thumpers in the south and mid west is done. I predict the Republican party will drop the Social Conservatives like a hot rock by 2014.

How can anyone be upset about the Casinos. It brings MILLIONS and MILLIONS to the state that would have gone to other states. It brings in tourism, it brings in jobs. Trust me, if people want to gamble, they will. Go to Charlestown and see what MD money has built there.

Slots parlors vs. real casinos. They are not going to build a rinky dink slot parlor in National Harbor or Balt City, they are building Vegas/AC style. Big difference. Like them or not, they will draw people and business.

The premise that building casinos in Maryland would keep money from going to WV made sense 4 years ago. But now, we already have enough strategically placed casinos in MD to keep the money here, and two sites authorized by the previous law have not yet been built! People don't go to West Virginia just to gamble... they go there because of other recreational opportunities. The only thing that will stop Marylanders from spending money in other states is if you build a wall around the state to keep everyone in. This law was all about O'Malley's cronies. Let's see who makes major campaign contributions to his 2016 white house bid.

Whether it goes to Education or not is still to be determined, but it keeps the money in the state and that is what is most important, because otherwise it would have left the state!

Too bad MD doesn't have a viable two party system. Incumbents get reelected all the time when the economy and other conditions would say otherwise. Voter illiteracy on civic and economic education is appalling, which also explains the national election.

Right, meanwhile, Maryland has the second best public education system in the nation, and it's the wealthiest as well.

Interestingly enough, most of the red states are bastions for poorer education. look at the electoral map - it doesn't lie.

The two party system in the whole country is a sham. Both of them take money from the same place, claim to have a wide gap of disagreement, but ultimately only disagree on publicly divisive emotional issues. It keeps the little people fighting while they both steal from us in issues that matter. So honestly, even if we had more of a red presence in Maryland, it wouldn't matter. We'd all still be fighting over piddly crap while our representatives give away stuff we might care about to the their corporate buddies. We'd get a little more notice in presidential elections, but that's about it.
And yes, education is appalling in this country when it comes to politics and education. It's all run by Texas. It's where they print textbooks, and as a note, is the litmus for what other states get, because nobody's printing 50 different versions of a book. Also. . . no matter how good our education is, the big corporate media (and this this means Fox AND CNN) works to undo anything you'd have learned in school anyway, especially if it's right.
The only thing I saw in the national election (assuming you mean the president) was a lack of choices. The two big parties put up nearly the same person, and well, the third parties get ignored as usual. As for the senate race that started this discussion. . . Not really much better. The most prominent[0] third party candidate was even a douchebag. I couldn't win!

Eric you're getting warm with your "two party sham". By getting warm I mean you're on the right train of thought. There is no real choice when choosing between the democratic or republican parties. Both parties are bought and owned by the banking cartel and lose no sleep from selling out the people of the United States. In fact politicians from both parties gain financially from their tyranny. All that said I have a strong distrust of the entire political system. Voter fraud would be an easy tool to be utilized to ensure the new world orders agenda is not compromised. Case in point, California's Proposition 37. 53.1% of California's voters allegedly voted against labeling genetically altered foods. 53.1% voted to not be informed of what they are eating. I have lived in various parts of California for several decades, and can assure you Californians of all walks of life are very concerned about environmental issues and especially knowing if their foods are organic or genetically altered. Voter fraud? Do the math. If prop 37 would have passed consumers would be informed of their foods content either organic or genetically altered. I don't know about you but I will not knowingly purchase genetically altered foods. Monsanto, DuPont, BASF and other large corporations involved with genetically altering foods would stand to loose billions IF prop 37 passed in California. Lucky for the multibillion dollar chemical companies 51.3% of Californians allegedly voted down prop 37.

"Right, meanwhile, Maryland has the second best public education system in the nation, and it's the wealthiest as well."
Yet in what counties is that wealth concentrated? Which Schools are the best? and how does that correlate to the vote totals Obama received in those areas? I await your informed analysis.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make Chris. All I am saying is that voter fraud would be very easy to invoke especially with electronic voting machines. I am by no means a supporter of either political party. When a politician is elected into office they are soon educated on how the system works and then must choose to be part of the system or stand for what they told their constituents they believe in. The latter is career suicide, so they choose politics as usual and sell out their constituents. These career politicians do what they are told with complete disregard to their constituents for their own personal financial gain.

I think the "take-away" for Cardin here is that he won with ONLY 53% of the vote. That means that 47% of voters cast a ballot against him. I would hope he takes that as a message.

LOL. Holy crap that's a hilariously desperate stretch. Not to mention Cardin didn't even bother spending a couple years campaigning or spending millions of his own money like the other balloted candidates and he STILL got a majority of votes in a 3 way race.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why the democrats win in Md, or anywhere else for that matter, America is becoming the "give me country" instead of a working country. for some reason a lot of so called americans think Uncle Sam owes them, i am, or was a registered democrat, gonna change that on Nov. 19. Helping others is a choice we as Americans should do,but that should be my choice as an individual ! My choice not the governments to take my money and give it away so they can be re elected!!!

WRONG! It's a combination of history, gerrymandering, the media perpetuating the lie of there actually being two different distinct parties, and the makeup of the issues the Left Hand of the Great and Powerful Oz being those that appeal to the emotions of the residents of MoCo, HoCo, Baltimore, PG County, etc. The issues the Right Hand of Oz screams about appeal more to the northwest part of the state, the Eastern shore, etc., where there's just less people.
In reality, most of those issues don't matter at the end of the day, and the ones that do. . . well, we're too busy paying attention to the puppets on the hands to realize there's two unified boots kicking the crap out of us.

The notion that you somehow get a raw deal when you pay taxes and that you don't get what you pay for is ridiculous.
You have got to get used to life in a postindustrial capitalist society. Structural unemployment caused by the migration of capital is going to be with us for a very long time. It will test our concept of what it means to be a citizen and test our sense of the value of our fellow citizens.
The legitimacy of the taxing authority of the federal government was settled for most of us a long time ago. Hasn't that happened for you, Dubya?
