Berthiaume Won't Run Again for School Board

The District 2 representative will leave after first term.

Board of Education member Laura Berthiaume will not seek re-election in 2012, the Parents' Coalition of Montgomery County reported.

Berthiaume of Rockville, told the Gazette she wants to spend more time with her three children, which had been difficult to do along with her duties on the board.

She represents District 2, which includes the Rockville, Richard Montgomery, Wootton, Winston Churchill and Northwest clusters.

Berthiaume said Montgomery County Public Schools' recently approved school redistricting, which would reduce the size of District 2, did not factor into her decision.

I was part of a very small team of hard workers who helped with Laura's campaign for BOE in 2008. I first met her in 2006 when she was running for state delegate. I have been honored to know her. The entire county owes her a huge debt of gratitude, especially for the BOE's recent support of the modernization of Wheaton High School and Thomas Edison High School of Technology, the county's only career and technology education school, and for her support in separating the two schools.

She is one of the most dedicated, resourceful, independent and strong-willed yet diplomatic BOE member in recent memory. She has staked out positions (like on chart schools) that were unpopular on the board but that were good for students. She cares deeply and was fully committed, and we are fortunate to have had her with us for this term. Running her law practice, while being a wife and mother are not easy tasks, indeed.

Thank you, Laura. You will be greatly missed!
