Montgomery Special Hockey Cheetah-thon!

Montgomery County residents will have a chance to support a hockey program for developmentally disabled youth by skating at the Rockville Ice Arena on May 12.

Alternatively they can pledge donations to support those who skate. Funds will go to the Montgomery Cheetahs Special Hockey Team. Donate online at http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/katherine-obrien-1/1stannualcheetah-thon

The Cheetah-thon will be held on Saturday, May 12, 5:00 7:00 p.m. at the Rockville Ice Arena, 50 Southlawn Court, Rockville, MD 20850.

Founded in 2006, the Cheetahs are Montgomery County’s first adaped ice hockey program for people with developmental disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome. Ice hockey has been shown to be especially beneficial to youngsters with neuromuscular challenges. More than 100 youth have participated in the program since its founding.

In addition to physical hockey skills, the Cheetahs program emphasizes the development of dependability, self-reliance, concentration, willingness to share and personal accountability. The game is used to help players be more successful inside and outside the hockey rink.

The Cheetahs practice weekly from September through March at Cabin John Ice Rink. Student mentors from Montgomery County school hockey teams provide one-on one assistance to Cheetah athletes at every practice.

The Cheetah-thon is the first major fundraiser for the Montgomery Special Hockey Club. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of ice time and equipment for the growing program. Expenses for the all-volunteer program are rising. During the 2011-2012 season, ice time alone cost more than $20,000.

The Cheetah-thon is open to skaters and non-skaters. Participants are encouraged to bring their friends and families to skate with the Cheetahs and their fans, or to show support by making a gift to the Cheetahs.

There will be prizes for top fundraisers. In addition to sponsoring skaters, supporters can purchase refreshment and raffle tickets and cheer on the participants.
